The trickiest part was cutting the bearing races, since it uses loose bearings that call for a carefully curved race rather than sealed units that just need a flat section of the right diameter with a shoulder on one end. Chris obviously did well on this task, since they spun very smoothly. The new axles weren't specially heat treated after machining, but Chris thinks they came out within a few points on the Rockford hardness scale from the original parts.
Luke has found from painful experience that while the original platform pedals were symmetrical the SPD pedals have a definite right and left and must notbe switched because once you click in it becomes nearly impossible to snap out again!
He also found that the extra little plastic shields that came with the MKS pedals to keep their corporate lawyers happy are much more important with a SPD pedal because you can accidentally trigger the quick release with your foot while snapping out if you don't have the plastic clip in place.
