The gears on the Sturmey Archer AW are low, lower, and lowest (58, 44, and 33 inches) to enable him to climb the Bay City hill. Because of the spin rates he has gotten used to with short cranks, (And the fact that I don't go very fast. M.S.) the 58" gear is adequately high.
He tried to use a proper British John Bull steel sidepull brake on the rear, but it wouldn't work with the fat 2.1" tire. So an "almost modern" cantilever setup was used. At least the arms are black.
It was easier to braze on new fender eyelets than to make longer fender struts.
