New Tires
Mark had a new 37-349 (16”x 1-3/8" tire from Brompton that looks like it should be pretty smooth rolling. A bit stiffer than a 37mm Primo Comet, but this one is the Kevlar belted version.
Despite having the same nominal size, it is about 2mm wider than the Comet, and is reputedly much tougher. The pressure rating is 100 psi vs 85 for the Comet. Mark isn't a fan of high pressures, but this is going on Jane's Moulton with it's dual suspension.
The newest size Primo Comet tire is a fat 406 - 54 ( 20" x 2.1") tire that is nevertheless quite thin and supple, so it doesn't weigh a ton and it will hopefully roll very nicely. He passed it around and for a tire that large it is quite flexible. Be careful to get the "Red Label" one. Not the identical sized "Yellow Label" heavy duty freestyle tire, which is much heavier and stiffer. Mark says your dealer can get these from Island, but Quality only carries the heavy one. (As of 6/3/04 Luke had some of these in stock at Calhoun Cycle. Also Schwalbe "Big Apples" in a variety of sizes, including 16 x 2.0)
Mark's comments; The rolling resistance of this tire is phenominal. At 60 psi it rode a bit harsh, so I let it down to 45. I still outcoast everyone I've ridden with. I will design my next "Go-Fast" bike to use this tire on the back . I spin so well, now that I'm running short cranks, that it's easier for me to optimize gearing with a 20" than a 26".
